Four Indigenous peoples live here: the Wixaritari (Huichol), the Náayeri (Cora), the Odam (Tepehuán) and the Nahuatl-speaking Mexicaneros, and the 2000 census counted 37,206 speakers of Indigenous languages. Colonial San Blas was one of the most important trade ports on the American Pacific coast. The former Territory of Tepic became a state in 1917. The economy rests on field and sea: tobacco, sugar cane, maize, beans and mango and, since the late 1990s, specialty Arabica coffee. Shrimp is fished at Santiago Ixcuintla, San Blas, Bahía de Banderas and Tecuala, and the Riviera Nayarit carries tourism. Since 2003, a Mexico–Canada agreement has eased seasonal work in Canada for Nayarit farmworkers. Higher education includes the Universidad Autónoma de Nayarit.",
