The landed cost
What a part or a product really costs in Mexico against where you make it today, including the costs people forget.
Why it decides the outcome
A factory price says little until freight, duties, fees, brokers, taxes and inland transport are added to it. Several of those layers depend on the tariff line, the origin of the parts and the route you choose, so a product that looks cheaper in Mexico can arrive dearer, and the reverse.
What we look at
- The tariff line and the duty that applies to it today, from the official text
- Whether the product qualifies as North American under the USMCA
- Freight, insurance and the customs broker’s fees on your real lane
- Value added tax, and when it is recovered
- On the way north: the USA duty on the finished product, which turns on qualifying as USMCA-originating
- Mexico’s duties on parts from countries with no trade agreement with Mexico
- If you produce in Mexico: wages, benefits and the state payroll tax
- The costs people forget: storage, demurrage, labelling, inspections and rework
